Welcome to our New Director!

Cate St. Clair, Library Director

Hi! My name is Cate St. Clair and I’m Robey’s new library director! I grew up in Des Moines but have been living in Waukon for just over a year with my partner Nic and my dog Saul. Nic hails from Sioux City and Saul from the animal shelter in Viroqua, but we’re all happy to call Waukon home now.

Prior to working at Robey I was a librarian at the Meehan Memorial Library in Lansing, a beautiful little library on the river. They have a wonderful section devoted to Iowa history, so next time you’re passing through you should stop and check it out.

Before I was a librarian, I was on track to become a lawyer. I graduated from Wellesley College and spent a year working as an AmeriCorps member in the Des Moines office of Iowa Legal Aid before receiving a scholarship to pursue community service law at Drake University Law School. While there I primarily focused on family and civil rights law. However, after graduating I found that pursuing a career as an attorney was not as rewarding as I had hoped it would be. At that point my partner Nic had taken a position at Jacobson, Bristol, Garrett & Swartz and been living in Waukon for a year before I was able to join him.

Fast forward a year and we have found a wonderful neighborhood to live in and a welcoming community to be a part of. We adopted our pound puppy, Saul, and his antics keep us on our toes. When we’re not at work we like to read, walk, and generally enjoy the beauty of Northeast Iowa. Our families are spread across the state, so when we have the time we enjoy taking road trips to Des Moines and Sioux City.

I have found library work to be incredibly rewarding, and am so excited about my new opportunity as director here at Robey. With the building project nearly behind us, and our grand re-opening on the horizon, the future looks bright and I am honored to be a part of it.
