2016 Summer Reading Program to start at RML

Join us for summer reading programs and challenge!

Slogan“Ready, Set, Read” is this year’s theme for Robey Memorial Library’s Summer Reading Program (SRP). SRP begins with Family Night on Monday, July 11th at 5:45pm-7:30pm.

Scheduled events include: Reading Challenge Registration, Stories by Sue Kiesau and puppet friends and Library Olympics, featuring fun, interactive games.  Young children attending must be supervised by an adult.

The 4-week Reading Challenge runs from Monday, July 11th through Saturday, August 6th. Children ages infant-through 6th grade (completed) and teens, grades 7 through 12 (completed), will be given prizes for participation. Participants can be entered into a drawing for special prizes. See our website or stop in for more details and participation rules.  As in past years, Reading Challenge participants will be displaying a Library Champion sign in their yard. Watch for these as you drive around town.

Kids/Teens Make-and-Take will be held Wednesday afternoons from 1:30-3:30, July 13, 20, 27 and August 3. Participants may come in anytime during that two-hour period to participate in a project. Stop in and view the Make-and-Take creations.

SloganTeens are encouraged to try the Summer Book Club for 7th through 12th graders. Read a book set in another country and share it on Wednesday, July 13th at 10:30. Register for the August 10th session to get the book “Miss Peregrine’s home for peculiar children” by Ransom Riggs for discussion.

Robey Memorial Library (RML) Trustees and staff will be available at a booth in the Pavilion during the Allamakee County Fair, Wednesday, July 20th – Sunday, July 24th providing information and answering questions regarding the library collection, services, etc.  Also, RML will have special activities planned during Kid’s Day on Friday, July 22nd from 12:00-4:00pm. Stop in and visit our children’s booth for fun activities and attend the library sponsored program, The ISU Insect Zoo, a two-hour display including Cockroach Races, held from 1:00 - 3:00. All are welcome to attend. A new feature added this year, is a Story Walk, families and children are encouraged to read a popular children's story by walking from page to page as they stroll the Fair Grounds. The starting point of the Story Walk is at RML booth in the Pavilion with interactive materials available for you as you complete the book.

RML continue its year-around programming through the summer w/ Tuesday Story Time: held each Tuesday morning from 10:30am-11:00am. Scheduled readers through the summer are Sue Kiesau, and Ross Geerdes (ACCB), Chris Anthony (HAWC) and library staff. After School w/ Ross: is scheduled on the fourth Tuesday, July 26th at 3:30 – 4:00, highlighting local wildlife, etc.

Summer Explorer series will resume the first two Wednesdays in August at 10:00-11:00am in the RML Community Room. Paul Kammarmeyer’s Balloon Sculpting program on Wednesday, August 3rd highlights the history of balloons and the skill of balloon line twisting. International Owl Center‘s Build an Owl children’s program is scheduled for Wednesday, August 10th at 10:00-11:00am. Learn first-hand about owls and owl adaptations and see a live owl.

Slogan copyAnd for adult readers our 2016 Exercise Your Mind…Read! Adult Reading Challenge is still going on. We encourage you to keep reading if you are already signed up. Or if not participating, it’s not too late to join us. Prizes (generously donated by area businesses) are given each month to one of the participants. Be sure to give the challenge a try -special drawing for July participants! We will be giving away gift certificates to The Wellness Center, Gettlebell Strength & Conditioning and a cookbook donated by Veteran’s Memorial Hospital. Join us for our free Healthy Life programs: July 13 at 5:30pm Yoga with Gettlebell Strength & Conditioning, August 10 at 5:30pm Eating Well w/ Jill Fleming of Veteran’s Memorial Hospital and August 25 at 5:30pm Healthy Habits w/ Betty Mueller.
