2017 Summer Reading Program to start at RML

Join us for summer reading programs and challenge!

Build a Better World" is the theme of Robey Memorial Library's 2017 Summer Reading Program. Patrons are invited to try something new this summer: at home, in the community, throughout the country, and around the globe. Read a new book, try a new craft, meet new people, and learn about new places.


The teen summer Reading Challenge begins on Monday, July 10th. Teens grade 7-12 are encourages to pick up or print a Reading Log. Teens who read or participate in activities can earn free books & prizes. Teen Summer Reading events include:

  • Saturday, July 8: After Hours Movie & Pizza, 4-6pm. We are showing Jurassic World (PG-13)
  • Wednesdays, July 12, 19, 26, August 2: Teen Make & Takes, 1-3pm. We are making Mini Succulent Gardens, Up-cycled Scratch Art, No-Sew T-Shirt Bags; and Pop-up Greeting Cards.


build better world 2Adults are encouraged to participate in the Build a Better World Reading Challenge through December 31st. Receive a drawing entry for reading from one of twelve pre-selected categories: how to, teaches you something; "tall" tale, legend or 500+ pages; set in the future; travel or adventure; short story; someone you admire; bestseller; with a structure or building on the cover; religious, spiritual or inspirational; with a place in the title; published in the decade you were born; or picked from a random library shelf. Prizes given by random drawing after the challenge is complete on December 31, 2017. Prizes include: a Kindle/tablet mp3 device, Waukon Bucks, and local business Gift Certificate bundle. Books must be read during the 2017 calendar year to be eligible for the drawing. Submit your entry form to the library or online throughout the year.

Adult Summer events include:

  • Our regular programs: Chess Club, Mondays, 4-6pm; Adult Coloring, Tuesdays, 4-6pm; Brown Bag 'n' Books Adult Story Time, Wednesday, July 5, 12-1pm; Hook & Needle Club, Thursday, July 6, 5:30pm; Free Monthly program: Human Trafficking, Thursday, July 27, 6-8pm.
  • Travel series: Video series taking you to places around the world from the comfort of RML! Visit Easter Islan; Rwanda; Hong Kong; Victoria, Australia; Scotland; and Newfoundland courtesy of Travelscope®. Tuesdays, July 11, 18, 25, August 8, 15, 1pm.


Children's summer events include:

  • Family Night on Monday, July 10th at 5:45pm-7:30pm is the kick-off of the Children's Summer Reading Program. Scheduled events include: Reading Challenge Registration, Stories by Sue Kiesau and puppet friends and a Tool Petting Zoo, a hands-on event to familiarize kids with simple tools and equipment.
  • The 4-week Reading Challenge runs from Monday, July 10th through Saturday, August 5th. Participants, ages infant through 6th grade (completed), will be given prizes for participation and can be entered into a drawing for special prizes. See our website or stop in to pick up a reading log and to get more details. As in past years, Reading Challenge participants will be displaying a Library Champion sign in their yard. Watch for these as you drive around town.
  • Kids Make-and-Take will be held Wednesday afternoons from 1:30-3:30, July 12, 19, 26 and August 2. Participants may come in anytime during that two-hour period to participate in a project. The planned Make-and-Take creations are available for viewing at the library; we will be making a Crazy Hair Planter, Newspaper Tower, 3-D Bird House, and Wax Crayon Print.
  • Kid's Day on Friday, July 21st from 12:00-4:00pm. Stop in and visit our children's booth for fun activities and attend the meet-and-greet program Incredible Bats, a three-hour display held from 1:00 - 4:00. The Incredible Bats program will include live fruit bats and skunks and is sponsored by Postville Public Library and Robey Memorial Library.
  • RML continue its year-around programming through the summer w/ Tuesday Story Time: held each Tuesday morning from 10:30am-11:00am. Scheduled readers through the summer are Sue Kiesau, and Ross Geerdes (ACCB), Chris Anthony (Helping Services) and library staff. Afternoon w/ Ross: is scheduled on the fourth Tuesday, July 25th at 3:30 – 4:00, highlighting the theme "Build a Better World."

Teen Slogan 1New this year is to the SRP is Fine Forgiveness for those who participate in one of our Reading Programs. Children and Teens who register for the Summer Reading Challenge July 10-August 5 can have your overdue fines forgiven. Adults who read at least one book for the 2017 Adult Reading Challenge before August 5 can have your overdue fines forgiven. (Be sure to remind the library staff of your participation). Fine Forgiveness does not include lost or damaged items on your library account.

All patrons are encouraged to bring their family and friends to Table Game Day on Saturday, July 15, 10am-12pm.
